Financials

Checking account balance is $23,196 as of Feb. 29, 2024. CD balance is $10,296. CD is currently earning 5.03% interest. The 2023 tax form 990-N has been filed. Our 2023 budgeted expenses were $13,065, and our actual expenses were $6,751. This is mostly due to a lack of applicants for our Action Grants. Unspent Action Grant funds will carry over to 2024. We have a healthy fund balance. There’s room in our budget to consider doing new projects.

Ideas and projects to consider

  1. Give away 500 trees at next year’s Plant a Valentine. Cost is minimal - $350. Approved.

  2. Award student scholarships. We currently have $500 in scholarship funds. Jeanne and Jane will research and come back with a recommendation on how to structure the scholarships.

  3. Board member names, photos, and bios on GSG website. Will start with names only.

  4. Allocate funds for the purchase of green items, such as reusable bags and refillable mugs, to give away at events. Need to determine what products, where to purchase, and the cost.

  5. Allocate funds for Recycle Right cards for educational programs in Pasquotank County schools and to give out at community events. Holly mentioned the county might be able to apply for a grant for the project. Holly will research the grant source. Need to talk with Pasquotank County Waste Dept. and determine their interest.

  6. We have about 80 GSG hats which were purchased for Love Your River in 2020 and never used. It was decided to give them to members.

How are we doing? What do we need to do differently?

  1. Be more open about who is on what committees and how they are selected.

  2. Differentiate between GSG activities and events where everyone is invited and GSG committee actions so people better understand why an activity or event is limited.

  3. More social gatherings. Provide better opportunities to get to know other members outside meetings. Perhaps bring back Green Drinks. Alternate months. Do Green Drinks one month and an outing the next. Holly will think about speakers for Green Drinks. Marlene will plan some outings.

  4. Need to start grooming from within our membership for people sunsetting off the board.

  5. Create a list of programs, events, and volunteer opportunities so people can go to the link and check what they can do.
