Chair Report
Marlene introduced Misti Rewis as Vice Chair and Sue Miller as Secretary.
Our bank account, checks, bookkeeping, and PO box have changed from past treasurer Sheila Wrenn to our new treasurer Woody Garthwaite. Sheila will file the 2024 tax return.
Marlene shared some of what the GSG Executive Committee and members have been doing behind the scenes to make connections, develop partnerships, and advance GSG’s initiatives.
2025 Budget and Approval
Marlene presented the budget with the following comments:
1. Expenses are high in 2025 because we collected $6,000 in 2024 for the Pasquotank Paddle Trail feasibility study and those funds will be paid out this year.
2. Currently GSG has $800 in donated funds dedicated to Scholarships. We are asking the board to add $1,200 for a total of $2,000. Goal is to give two scholarships this year.
3. Reduced Action Grant spending. Committee plans to make some changes to the program and will get back with recommendations.
The 2025 Budget was approved unanimously.
2024 Annual Report
A motion was made and the board unanimously approved the 2024 Annual Report as presented. Holly suggested we request a few minutes at a Pasquotank County Commissioner’s meeting to share GSG’s successes and what we do for the community.
Watershed Watch Grant Application
A motion was made and the board unanimously approved GSG apply for an approximately $7,000 Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership grant to cover Albemarle Watershed Watch testing May to October this year. But only in the event Pasquotank County declines our request to apply for the grant.
Liability Waiver for Events
The issue of obtaining liability waivers from volunteers was discussed. We have not done this in the past. Lisa suggested GSG volunteers might be able to sign an annual waiver which covers activities for the year. Nita suggested we discuss the need and kind of waiver with our insurance agent. A motion was made and the board unanimously approved the use of waivers.
Senate Bill 20 Prohibiting Balloon Releases
Because of its impact on litter, a motion was made and the board approved Green Saves Green sending a letter in support of the bill to our local representatives.
The next GSG Board Meeting will be May 12, 2025.
