Green Saves Green

2022 ANNUAL REPORT

In 2022, we launched new initiatives targeting outdoor student environmental education and action. We created a collaborative partnership to clean up Elizabeth City before the inaugural in-person U.S. Coast Guard Marathon. And we gave away hundreds of trees and pollinator plants, collected monthly water samples from our rivers and creeks, improved our local trails, and hosted special events for families to connect with nature.

Student Campus Cleanups

We showed up in spring and fall with all the supplies, and the students did the work. We were thrilled with their enthusiasm, excitement, and determination to do a good job. Ten schools, from elementary to high school, participated in our Campus Cleanups. And they want to do it again!

Student Outdoor Learning

We know some of the best learning happens when it’s outdoors and hands on, so we purchased four student water testing kits and let more than 100 middle and high school students get to work. For teachers, we put together a guide to exciting nearby environmental field trip options. Check it out here.

Roots and Shoots

We brought the global Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots youth-powered program to our communities. To qualify for our mini-grants, students identify and complete a local environmental project. We started with a pilot litter removal project and will expand in 2023. Learn more here.

Pre-Marathon Cleanup

One hundred thirty-one volunteers hit Elizabeth City’s streets and parks to pick up litter before thousands of runners and spectators arrived for the U.S. Coast Guard Marathon. With all the cleanups we organized, we collected and disposed of 130 bags of litter!

Albemarle Watershed Watch

Our team of Watershed Watchers were out from May through October collecting water samples, testing salinity, dissolved oxygen, and more at 11 sites. Throughout the winter months, we will be monitoring 7 sites in Pasquotank County’s creeks and rivers. The samples and data we collect are sent to our research partners at UNC and NCSU, where scientists are working to find the causes and cures of toxic algal blooms in our region.

Tree and Plant Giveaways

In partnership with the NC Forest Service, we gave away 200 redbud seedlings at our Plant A Valentine event. We were delighted to see so many people wanting to plant native trees to help wildlife and make our communities even more beautiful. And it was standing room only at June’s Plants for Pollinators workshop, where 45 participants received milkweed plants and zinnia and cosmos seeds to create pollinator gardens at home.

Wetlands Trail Renovation

Through our partnership with the Rotary Community Corps, we raised enough funds to complete the renovation of the beautiful Fenwick-Hollowell Wetlands Trail behind the College of the Albemarle on the Pasquotank River.
