Renewable Energy

We support wind and solar energy in northeastern NC

In 2017, Amazon Wind Farm became the first large-scale wind energy producer in NC. And right in our backyard! The wind farm’s 104 turbines stretch across 22,000 acres of farm land in Perquimans and Pasquotank counties and produce enough electricity to power 61,000 homes.

We salute the visionary farmers and county officials who recognized the economic and environmental impact of the project to the community and made it happen.

In 2018 at the Green Saves Green Expo, we organized public tours of the wind farm that sold out! Tour participants enjoyed the opportunity to experience the turbines up close and speak to the farmers who allowed the turbines to be installed on their land. The goal of the Expo and tours was to raise awareness of the benefits of renewable energy to the environment and the local economy.

Youth Environmental Education

As part of our outdoor student environmental program, we take students on field trips to the wind farm to learn about renewable energy. For information on this and other field trip resources in northeastern NC, click here.

A second wind farm starts operations

Timbermill Wind farm in Chowan County became the state's second land-based wind farm in December 2024.

Construction for the project began in May 2023. The 45-turbine project has a capacity of 189 MW, enough to power approximately 47,000 homes annually. Timbermill Wind is now the biggest taxpayer in Chowan County.

Green Saves Green members got an up close look at the new generation turbines at Timbermill Wind on a tour in June 2025.
